About Green Charcoal SA

Green Charcoal SA manufactures and supplies top quality, appropriately priced, eco-friendly charcoal and briquettes for use in braais, catering for both residential and commercial use.

Our quality briquettes and charcoal are manufactured from harvesting Black Wattle Trees, an invasive alien tree that consumes excessive amounts of water needed for farming activities.

WHY CHOOSE US

Whilst the company is young, our manufacturing capacities are well established. We believe that we have enough expertise, resources, and commitment from our manpower to make Green Charcoal one of the leading charcoal manufacturers and exporters in South Africa.

Manufacturing Process

Green Charcoal manufactures good quality charcoal and briquettes on a consistent basis for local South African markets, quite fanatical about their charcoal quality for the famous “braai”.

Employment

The Eastern Cape is an area that has a very high level of unemployment. The last minimum wage increase has provided a real opportunity for hardworking individuals to have a good and sustainable income. Green Charcoal is promoting the employment of local manpower and the employment of previously disadvantaged woman. This is an important part in the packaging division of the company. All the people employed were previously unemployed and have now learned skills through the informal skills transfer program that the company promotes.

Equipment

The equipment used consists of wood-burning ovens, which are fed by a number of small saws and log splitters, that facilitate the burning of wood. There is a Briquette machine which is the only facility between Port Elizabeth and George.

Local Content

The company works with local entrepreneurs who participate in opportunities like providing Black Wattle wood to the charcoal factory on a contractual basis and transport contractors that transport wood from remote areas to the charcoal factory. A number of entrepreneurs have already been contracted who are successfully contributing to the production capacities of the charcoal factory.

Capacity

Each oven can produce between 2.5 and 3 tons of charcoal per day. The charcoal is sifted out in 3 cm and larger pieces of which charcoal is packed. Smaller pieces are milled and used for the manufacturing of briquettes. The Briquette machine can press between 8 and 9 tons of briquettes per day on a 9-hour shift. Briquettes are dried next to the Charcoal ovens in a ventilation tunnel.

Wood

There is a large number of black wattle trees, an invasive alien tree that has polluted and robbed large areas in the Humansdorp and Kareedouw area of water destined for farming activities. Green Charcoal work with the “Work for Water Project” in the area and these trees are cut and our workers collect the wood and transport it to the factory for processing. We are also assisting various farmers in the area by cutting trees and cleaning the areas of the wood and transferring it to the factory for charcoal production.
